!1 Sam 15:1-3
1 Sámuel így szólt Saulhoz: „Az Úr küldött, hogy fölkenjelek népe, Izrael királyává! Hallgass hát az Úr szavára! 
2 Ezt mondja a Seregek Ura: Meg akarom torolni, amit Amalek Izrael ellen vétett: nem adott neki utat, amikor kivonult Egyiptomból. 
3 Rajta hát, menj, és támadd meg Amaleket, és töltsd be rajta és mindenén, amije csak van, az átkot. Ne kíméld, hanem ölj meg férfit és nőt, gyereket és csecsemőt, marhát és juhot, tevét és szamarat!”

4 Saul tehát odaparancsolta a népet, és Telamban számba vette az embereket: kétszázezer gyalogos [és tízezer júdeai]. 
5 Aztán Saul kivonult Amalek székhelye ellen, s lesbe állított egy csapatot az árokban. 
6 A kenitáknak azt mondta Saul: „Rajta! Húzódjatok vissza, s vonuljatok ki Amalek földjéről, nehogy velük együtt benneteket is kiirtsalak. Mert ti, amikor kivonultunk Egyiptomból, megértők voltatok Izrael fiai iránt.” A keniták tehát odébb vonultak Amalek földjéről. 
7 Saul megverte Amaleket Havilától egészen Surig, amely Egyiptomtól keletre fekszik. 
8 Amalek királyát, Agagot élve fogta el, a népet azonban kardélre hányta, s így betöltötte rajta az átkot.

9 Ám Agagot megkímélte Saul és a nép, és ugyanígy a kecskék-juhok és a marhák javát is, a legszebb hízott állatokat, s mind, ami csak értékes holmi akadt: nem töltötte be rajtuk az átkot. Csak azon töltötték be az átkot, ami a jószágból selejtes volt, s nem sokat ért. 
10 Ezért az Úr szózatot intézett Sámuelhez. Azt mondta: 
11 „Bánom, hogy Sault királlyá tettem, mert elfordult tőlem és nem teljesítette parancsaimat.” Ez nagyon fájt Sámuelnek, úgyhogy egész éjszaka könyörgött az Úrhoz.

But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: but one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. Note that the Evangelist maketh use of a word of special significance. He saith not : Penetrated his side : nor yet : Wounded : nor any other thing ; but rather : Opened : that thereby in a sense the door of life might be thrown open, from whence the Sacraments of the Church have flowed forth, without which there is no entrance into the life which is the only true life. For that blood was shed for the remission of sins ; and that water hath brought into being the life-giving flagon, which same is both the laver of Baptism and the cup that giveth refreshment to them that thirst. All this was announced long before, to wit, when Noah was commanded to make a door in the side of the ark, through which might enter all living creatures which were not destined to perish in the flood ; and this same is a figure of the Church.
