Ant.

Ant. Quia promísit Dóminus corónam vigilántibus.

Invitatory {Antiphon from the Psalter for the season of the Church year}
Ant. Let it not be vain for you to rise up early, before the light: * For the Lord hath promised a crown to them that watch.
Ant. Let it not be vain for you to rise up early, before the light: * For the Lord hath promised a crown to them that watch.
Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.
Ant. Let it not be vain for you to rise up early, before the light: * For the Lord hath promised a crown to them that watch.
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For the Lord will not cast off his people: for in his hand are all the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his.
Ant. For the Lord hath promised a crown to them that watch.
For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (genuflect) Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us: For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Ant. Let it not be vain for you to rise up early, before the light: * For the Lord hath promised a crown to them that watch.
Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts: As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.
Ant. For the Lord hath promised a crown to them that watch.
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. Let it not be vain for you to rise up early, before the light: * For the Lord hath promised a crown to them that watch.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Hymn {from the Psalter for the season of the Church year}
The fast, as taught by holy lore,
We keep in solemn course once more:
The fast to all men known, and bound
In forty days of yearly round.

The law and seers that were of old
In diverse ways this Lent foretold,
Which Christ, all seasons’ King and Guide,
In after ages sanctified.

More sparing therefore let us make
The words we speak, the food we take,
Our sleep and mirth, —and closer barred
Be every sense in holy guard.

Avoid the evil thoughts that roll
Like waters o’er the heedless soul;
Nor let the foe occasion find
Our souls in slavery to bind.

In prayer together let us fall,
And cry for mercy, one and all,
And weep before the Judge’s feet,
And his avenging wrath entreat.

Thy grace have we offended sore,
By sins, O God, which we deplore;
But pour upon us from on high,
O pardoning One, thy clemency.

Remember thou, though frail we be,
That yet thine handiwork are we;
Nor let the honour of thy name
Be by another put to shame.

Forgive the sin that we have wrought;
Increase the good that we have sought:
That we at length, our wanderings o'er,
May please thee here and evermore.

Grant O thou Blessed Trinity,
Grant, O Essential Unity,
That this our fast of forty days
May work our profit and thy praise.
Amen.

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew
Matt 20:17-28
In that time, Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart, and said to them: Behold we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death. And so on.

Homily by St. Ambrose, Bishop of Milan.
Bk. v to Gratian, on Faith, c. ii
Consider what it was that the mother of Zebedee's children came to Christ desiring, with, and for her sons. She was a mother, who, longing for the honour of her sons, preferred a request immoderate, and yet pardonable. She was a mother who, albeit stricken in years and comfortless, at an age when she had sore need of the strength of her offspring to help and keep her, was yet so earnest in godliness and motherly love, that she had liefer suffer the loss of her sons, that they might gain the reward of following Christ still, as we read they had already done, when, at the first call of the Lord, they left their nets and their father, iv. 21, 22.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The Angel said unto Jacob
* Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said: I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. And he blessed him there.
℣. And when Jacob arose, behold there wrestled a man with him, until the breaking of the day and, when he saw that he prevailed not, he said unto him
℟. Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said: I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. And he blessed him there.
℣. Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum.
℟. Amen.

Lectio 2

℟. Et salva facta est ánima mea.
℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. God's most mighty strength alway be His people's staff and stay.
℟. Amen.

Reading 2
She, then, yielding to the intensity of her motherly love, besought the Saviour, saying, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one at thy right hand and the other at thy left hand, in thy kingdom. Although it was a mistake, it was a mistake of love. For a mother's love knoweth no moderation. Yet, although it was a greedy prayer, that was a pardonable greed, which hungered, not for riches, but for grace. Neither was that request shameless which sought, not her own good, but her children's. Remember that she was a mother. Think how that she was a mother.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. I have seen God face to face;
* And my life is preserved.
℣. And he said unto me: thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name.
℟. And my life is preserved.
℣. Iube, Dómine, benedícere.
Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.
℟. Amen.

Lectio 3
Benediction. May He that is the Angels' King to that high realm His people bring.
℟. Amen.

Reading 3
Christ took into His consideration that mother's love of hers, which made her sons' reward the comfort of her own old age, and which could bear the loss of her loved ones, broken as she was by a mother's yearnings. Consider also that she was a woman, that is, of the weaker sex, to which the Lord had not yet given strength by His Passion. Consider, I say, that she was an heiress of Eve, and weakened by that transmission of the unbridled covetousness of the first woman, which the Lord had not yet disarmed by His Blood, even that craving for undue dignity, wherewith all our natures are imbued, and which Christ's Bloodshedding had not yet washed away. She erred indeed, but the mistake was an inherited weakness.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. When Jacob heard that Esau came to meet him, he divided his sons and his wives, saying: If Esau smite the one company, then the other shall escape.
* Deliver me, O Lord, Who saidst unto me: I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
℣. O Lord, Who saidst unto me: Return unto thy country O Lord, Which feedest me still from my youth up.
℟. Deliver me, O Lord, Who saidst unto me:

2:6 The bow of the mighty is overcome, * and the weak are girt with strength.
2:7 They that were full before have hired out themselves for bread: * and the hungry are filled,

Isa 58:1
℟. Deo grátias.

Hymnus
O sol salútis, íntimis,
Iesu, refúlge méntibus,
Dum, nocte pulsa, grátior
Orbi dies renáscitur.

Dans tempus acceptábile,
Da lacrimárum rívulis
Laváre cordis víctimam,
Quam læta adúrat cáritas.

Quo fonte manávit nefas,
Fluent perénnes lácrimæ,
Si virga pœniténtiæ
Cordis rigórem cónterat.

Dies venit, dies tua,
In qua reflórent ómnia:
Lætémur et nos in viam
Tua redúcti déxtera.

Te prona mundi máchina,
Clemens, adóret, Trínitas,
Et nos novi per grátiam
Novum canámus cánticum.
Amen.

℣. Ángelis suis Deus mandávit de te.

Chapter Hymn Verse {from the Psalter for the day of the week}
Isa 58:1
Cry, cease not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show my people their wicked doings, and the house of Jacob their sins.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Hymn
Jesu, salvation’s Sun Divine,
Within our inmost bosoms shine,
With light all darkness drive away
And give the world a better day.

Now days of grace with mercy flow,
O Lord, the gift of tears bestow,
To wash our stains in every part,
Whilst heavenly fire consumes the heart.

Rise, crystal tears, from that same source
From whence our sins derive their course;
Nor cease, till hardened hearts relent,
And softened by your streams, repent.

Behold, the happy days return,
The days of joy for them that mourn;
May we of their indulgence share,
And bless the God that grants our prayer.

May heaven and earth aloud proclaim
The Trinity’s almighty fame;
And we, restored to grace, rejoice
In newness both of heart and voice.
Amen.

℣. God hath given His Angels charge over thee.
℟. To keep thee in all thy ways.

Hymn
Now in the sun's new dawning ray,
Lowly of heart, our God we pray
That he from harm may keep us free
In all the deeds this day shall see.

May fear of him our tongues restrain,
Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:
His favouring care our guardian be,
Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

May every heart be pure from sin
And folly find no place therein:
Scant need of food, excess denied,
Wear down in us the body's pride.

That when the light of day is gone,
And night in course shall follow on.
We, free from cares the world affords,
May chant the praise that is our Lord's.

All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.
Amen.

℟. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
Psalms {from the Psalter for the season of the Church year}
Ant. As I live, * saith the Lord, I have no pleasure in the death of the sinner, but rather that he be converted and live.
Psalm 25 [1]
25:1 Judge me, O Lord, for I have walked in my innocence: * and I have put my trust in the Lord, and shall not be weakened.
25:2 Prove me, O Lord, and try me; * burn my reins and my heart.
25:3 For thy mercy is before my eyes; * and I am well pleased with thy truth.
25:4 I have not sat with the council of vanity: * neither will I go in with the doers of unjust things.
25:5 I have hated the assembly of the malignant; * and with the wicked I will not sit.
25:6 I will wash my hands among the innocent; * and will compass thy altar, O Lord:
25:7 That I may hear the voice of thy praise: * and tell of all thy wondrous works.
25:8 I have loved, O Lord, the beauty of thy house; * and the place where thy glory dwelleth.
25:9 Take not away my soul, O God, with the wicked: * nor my life with bloody men:
25:10 In whose hands are iniquities: * their right hand is filled with gifts.
25:11 But as for me, I have walked in my innocence: * redeem me, and have mercy on me.
25:12 My foot hath stood in the direct way: * in the churches I will bless thee, O Lord.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Psalmus 51 [2]
51:3 Quid gloriáris in malítia, * qui potens es in iniquitáte?
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℟. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
Psalm 51 [2]
51:3 Why dost thou glory in malice, * thou that art mighty in iniquity?
51:4 All the day long thy tongue hath devised injustice: * as a sharp razor, thou hast wrought deceit.
51:5 Thou hast loved malice more than goodness: * and iniquity rather than to speak righteousness.
51:6 Thou hast loved all the words of ruin, * O deceitful tongue.
51:7 Therefore will God destroy thee for ever: * he will pluck thee out, and remove thee from thy dwelling place: and thy root out of the land of the living.
51:8 The just shall see and fear, and shall laugh at him, and say: * Behold the man that made not God his helper:
51:9 But trusted in the abundance of his riches: * and prevailed in his vanity.
51:10 But I, as a fruitful olive tree in the house of God, * have hoped in the mercy of God for ever, yea for ever and ever.
51:11 I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: * and I will wait on thy name, for it is good in the sight of thy saints.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Psalmus 52 [3]
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℟. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
Ant.
Psalm 52 [3]
52:1 The fool said in his heart: * There is no God.
52:2 They are corrupted, and become abominable in iniquities: * there is none that doth good.
52:3 God looked down from heaven on the children of men: * to see if there were any that did understand, or did seek God.
52:4 All have gone aside, they are become unprofitable together, * there is none that doth good, no not one.
52:5 Shall not all the workers of iniquity know, * who eat up my people as they eat bread?
52:6 They have not called upon God: * there have they trembled for fear, where there was no fear.
52:6 For God hath scattered the bones of them that please men: * they have been confounded, because God hath despised them.
52:7 Who will give out of Sion the salvation of Israel? * when God shall bring back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Who orderest time and change aright,
Who send’st the early morning ray,

O strength and stay upholding all creation,
Who ever dost thyself unmoved abide,
Yet day by day the light in due gradation
From hour to hour through all its changes guide:

Grant to life’s day a calm unclouded ending,
An eve untouched by shadows of decay,
The brightness of a holy death-bed blending
With dawning glories of th’ eternal day.

Hear us, O Father, gracious and forgiving,
And thou, O Christ, the co-eternal Word,
Who, with the Holy Ghost, by all things living
Now and to endless ages art adored.

Chapter Hymn Verse {from the Psalter for the day of the week}
Joel 2:17
Between the porch and the altar the priests the Lord's ministers shall weep, and shall say: Spare, O Lord, spare thy people: and give not thy inheritance to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Hymn
O kind Creator, bow thine ear
To mark the cry, to know the tear
Before thy throne of mercy spent
In this thy holy fast of Lent.

Our hearts are open, Lord, to thee:
Thou knowest our infirmity;
Pour out on all who seek thy face
Abundance of thy pardoning grace.

Our sins are many, this we know;
Spare us, good Lord, thy mercy show;
And for the honour of thy name
Our fainting souls to life reclaim.

Give us the self-control that springs
From discipline of outward things,
That fasting inward secretly
The soul may purely dwell with thee.

We pray thee, Holy Trinity,
One God, unchanging Unity,
That we from this our abstinence
May reap the fruits of penitence.
Amen.

℣. God hath given His Angels charge over thee.
℟. To keep thee in all thy ways.

Hymn
Before the ending of the day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That with thy wonted favor thou
Wouldst be our guard and keeper now.

From all ill dreams defend our eyes,
From nightly fears and fantasies;
Tread under foot our ghostly foe,
That no pollution we may know.

O Father, that we ask be done,
Through Jesus Christ, thine only Son;
Who, with the Holy Ghost and thee,
Doth live and reign eternally.
Amen.
