Ant. Quóniam ipse fecit nos.
Quadragínta annis próximus fui generatióni huic, et dixi; Semper hi errant corde, ipsi vero non cognovérunt vias meas: quibus iurávi in ira mea; Si introíbunt in réquiem meam.

Invitatory {Antiphon from the Psalter for the day of the week}
Ant. Let us adore the Lord * He is our Creator.
Ant. Let us adore the Lord * He is our Creator.
Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.
Ant. Let us adore the Lord * He is our Creator.
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For the Lord will not cast off his people: for in his hand are all the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his.
Ant. He is our Creator.
For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (genuflect) Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us: For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Ant. Let us adore the Lord * He is our Creator.
Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts: As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.
Ant. He is our Creator.
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. Let us adore the Lord * He is our Creator.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. He is our Creator.

Hymnus {ex Psalterio secundum tempora}
Primo diérum ómnium,
Quo mundus extat cónditus,
Vel quo resúrgens Cónditor
Nos morte victa líberat.

Pulsis procul torpóribus
Surgámus omnes ócius,
Et nocte quærámus pium
Sicut prophétam nóvimus.

Nostras preces ut áudiat,
Suámque dextram pórrigat:
Et expiátos sórdibus
Reddat polórum sédibus.

Ut quique sacratíssimo
Huius diéi témpore
Horis quiétis psállimus,
Donis beátis múneret.

Iam nunc patérna cláritas
Te postulámus áffatim:
Absit libído sórdidans
Et omnis actus nóxius.

Ne fœda sit, vel lúbrica
Compágo nostri córporis,
Per quem Avérni ígnibus
Ipsi cremémur ácrius.

Ob hoc Redémptor, quǽsumus,
Ut probra nostra díluas,
Vitæ perénnis cómmoda
Nobis benígne cónferas.

Quo carnis actu éxsules
Effécti ipsi cælibes,
Ut præstolámur cérnui,
Melos canámus glóriæ.

Præsta, Pater piíssime,
Patríque compar Únice,
Cum Spíritu Paráclito
Regnans per omne sǽculum.
Amen.
Hymn {from the Psalter for the season of the Church year}
Hail day! whereon the One in Three
First formed the earth by sure decree,
The day its Maker rose again,
And vanquished death, and burst our chain.

Away with sleep and slothful ease
We raise our hearts and bend our knees,
And early seek the Lord of all,
Obedient to the Prophet's call.

That He may hearken to our prayer,
Stretch forth His strong right arm to spare,
And ev'ry past offense forgiven,
Restore us to our home in heaven.

Assembled here this holy day,
This holiest hour we raise the lay,
And O that He to whom we sing,
May now reward our offering!

O Father of unclouded light!
Keep us this day as in thy sight,
In word and deed that we may be
From ev'ry touch of evil free.

That this our body's mortal frame
May know no sin, and fear no shame,
Nor fire hereafter be the end
Of passions which our bosom rend.

Redeemer of the world, we pray
That thou wouldst wash our sins away,
And give us, of Thy boundless grace,
The blessings of the heavenly place.

Most Holy Father, hear our cry,
Through Jesus Christ our Lord most High
Who, with the Holy Ghost and thee
Shall live and reign eternally.
Amen.

Nocturn I.
Ant. Beátus vir * qui in lege Dómini meditátur.
Psalmus 1 [1]
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℟. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Nocturn I.
Ant. Blessed is the man * who studieth the law of the Lord.
Psalm 1 [1]
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

2:3 Dirumpámus víncula eórum: * et proiciámus a nobis iugum ipsórum.
2:4 Qui hábitat in cælis, irridébit eos: * et Dóminus subsannábit eos.
2:7 Dóminus dixit ad me: * Fílius meus es tu, ego hódie génui te.
2:8 Póstula a me, et dabo tibi gentes hereditátem tuam, * et possessiónem tuam términos terræ.
2:9 Reges eos in virga férrea, * et tamquam vas fíguli confrínges eos.
2:11 Servíte Dómino in timóre: * et exsultáte ei cum tremóre.

2:7 Disse-me o Senhor: * tu és meu filho, eu hoje te gerei.

3:7 Non timébo míllia pópuli circumdántis me: * exsúrge, Dómine, salvum me fac, Deus meus.
3:8 Quóniam tu percussísti omnes adversántes mihi sine causa: * dentes peccatórum contrivísti.

Dan 1:10-15
10 And the prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel: I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed you meat and drink: who if he should see your faces leaner than those of the other youths your equals, you shall endanger my head to the king.
11 And Daniel said to Malasar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Ananias, Misael, and Azarias:
12 Try, I beseech thee, thy servants for ten days, and let pulse be given us to eat, and water to drink:
13 And look upon our faces, and the faces of the children that eat of the king's meat: and as thou shalt see, deal with thy servants.
14 And when he had heard these words, he tried them for ten days.

℣. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.

℟. Super muros tuos, Ierúsalem, constítui custódes;

℣. Prædicábunt pópulis fortitúdinem meam, et annuntiábunt géntibus glóriam meam.

℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.

From the Book addressed To Virgins by St. Athanasius, Pope of Alexandria.
Bk. ii.
If any should come and say unto thee, Fast not so often, lest thou injure thine health, believe them not, neither listen to them. They are but the tools of the great enemy to suggest such a thing unto thee. Remember how it is written that when the three children, and Daniel, and the other lads, were led captives by Nebuchadnezzar King of Babylon, and it was commanded them to eat of his Royal table, and to drink of his wine, Daniel and those three children would not defile themselves with the King's table, but said unto the eunuch into whose keeping they had been given, Give us of the fruits of the earth, and we will eat. And the eunuch answered them, I fear my lord the King, who hath appointed your meat and your drink, lest perchance your faces should appear unto the King worse - liking than the other children, who are fed from his Royal table, and he should punish me.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem;
* Which shall never hold their peace day nor night, to praise the name of the Lord.
℣. They shall proclaim My might unto the nations, and declare My glory unto the Gentiles.
℟. Which shall never hold their peace day nor night, to praise the name of the Lord.
℣. Iube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ. Amen.

Et ne putes hæc témere dici; habes huius rei testimónium in Evangéliis a Salvatóre prolátum.
℣. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.

℟. Muro tuo inexpugnábili circumcínge nos, Dómine, et armis tuæ poténtiæ prótege nos semper:
* Líbera, Dómine, Deus Israël, clamántes ad te.
℣. Erue nos in mirabílibus tuis, et da glóriam nómini tuo.
℟. Líbera, Dómine, Deus Israël, clamántes ad te.
℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May Christ to all His people give, for ever in His sight to live. Amen.

Then they said unto him Prove thy servants ten days, and give us herbs. And he gave them pulse to eat and water to drink and, when he brought them in before the King, their countenances appeared fairer than all the children which did eat the portion of the King's meat. Seest thou what fasting doth It healeth diseases, it drieth up the humours of the body, it scareth away devils, it purgeth forth unclean thoughts, it maketh the intellect clearer, it purifieth the heart, it sanctifieth the body, and in the end it leadeth a man unto the throne of God. Think not that this is rash talking. Thou hast the testimony of this in the Gospels under the sanction of the Saviour Himself. His disciples asked Him why they could not cast out an evil spirit, and He said unto them This kind can come forth by nothing but by prayer and fasting. Mark ix. 28.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Hedge us about with thy wall that cannot be broken down, O Lord, and shield us continually with the arms of thy might.
* O Lord God of Israel, deliver them that cry unto thee.
℣. Deliver us also according to thy marvellous works, and give glory to thy Name.
℟. O Lord God of Israel, deliver them that cry unto thee.
℣. Iube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris. Amen.

℣. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.

℟. Non in perpétuum obliviscáris nos.

℟. Non in perpétuum obliviscáris nos.

Reading 6
If any man therefore be troubled with an unclean spirit, if he bethink him of this, and have recourse to this remedy, namely, fasting, the evil spirit will be forthwith compelled to leave him from dread of the power of fasting. Devils take great delight in fulness, and drunkenness, and bodily comfort. There is great power in fasting, and great and glorious things are wrought thereby. How cometh it that men work such wonders, and that signs are done by them, and that God through them giveth health to the sick, unless it be from their ghostly exercises, and the meekness of their souls, and their godly conversation To fast is to banquet with Angels, and he that fasteth is to be reckoned, so far, among the Angelic host.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. We looked for peace, and it came not we asked for good, and behold trouble. We acknowledge, O Lord, our wickedness.
* Forget us not for ever.
℣. O Lord (our God) we have sinned, we have done ungodly, we have dealt unrighteously in all thine ordinances.
℟. Forget us not for ever.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. Forget us not for ever.

Ant. Why, O Lord, * hast thou retired afar off?
Psalm 9(22-32) [7]

From the Holy Gospel according to Matthew
Matt 13:24-30
At that time, Jesus said to the people a parable: The kingdom of heaven is likened to a man that sowed good seeds in his field. And so on.

Homily by St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo.
Quest. Evang. Matth. xi, Bk. 4
When the Shepherds of the Church wax careless, and since the Apostles sleep the sleep of death, cometh the devil, and soweth them whom the Lord calleth a seed of evil-doers. Now, are these seed of evil-doers the heretics, or Catholics of bad lives? It is possible to call even the heretics a seed of evil-doers because they have sprung up from the seed of the Gospel, and been begotten in the Name of Christ, though afterwards they have turned after crooked ways and lying doctrines.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Blessed is the people
* Whom the Lord of hosts hath blessed, saying O Israel thou art the work of Mine own hands, thou art Mine own inheritance.
℣. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, and the people whom He hath chosen for His own inheritance.
℟. Whom the Lord of hosts hath blessed, saying O Israel thou art the work of Mine own hands, thou art Mine own inheritance.
℣. Iube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum. Amen.

Reading 8
But whereas it is written that they were sown in the midst of the wheat, we ought haply to understand that they are of one communion with the righteous. Nevertheless, forasmuch as the Lord saith, The field is the world, (and not, the Church,) we may well understand that the seed of evil doers are the heretics, since in this world they are mingled together with the good, not in one common Communion, but only under one common name of Christian. But they which are of one faith with the good seed, and yet are themselves worthless, may more fitly be likened to straw than to tares, since the straw springeth from one soil and one root with the good ear.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. One Seraph cried unto another:
* Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory.
℣. There are Three That bear record in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost, and these Three are One.
℟. Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God of hosts.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. The whole earth is full of His glory.
℣. Iube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Ad societátem cívium supernórum perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum. Amen.

Lectio 9
℣. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.

Reading 9
However, as touching the net cast into the sea, and enclosing a great multitude of fishes, both bad and good, we may well understand that by the bad are meant Catholics of bad lives. For the sea is one thing whereby we may understand to be signified the world; and the net another, which seemeth to signify our faith, or the Communion of one Church. Between heretics and sinful Catholics there is this difference, that heretics believe a lie, and sinful Catholics believe the truth, but live not as they believe.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Te Deum
We praise thee, O God, * we acknowledge thee to be the Lord.
All the earth doth worship thee, * the Father everlasting.
To thee all Angels cry aloud, * the Heavens, and all the Powers therein.
To thee Cherubim and Seraphim * continually do cry.

(bow head) Holy, Holy, Holy * Lord God of Sabaoth;

Heaven and earth are full * of the Majesty of thy glory.
The glorious company of the Apostles * praise thee.
The goodly fellowship of the Prophets * praise thee.
The noble army of Martyrs * praise thee.
The holy Church throughout all the world * doth acknowledge thee;
The Father, * of an infinite Majesty.
Thine honourable, true, * and only Son;
Also the Holy Ghost, * the Comforter.
Thou art the King of Glory, * O Christ.
Thou art the everlasting * Son of the Father.

During the following verse all make a profound bow:
When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, * thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb.

When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, * thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God, * in the glory of the Father.
We believe that thou shalt come * to be our Judge.

Kneel for the following verse
We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, * whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious Blood.

Make them to be numbered with thy Saints, * in glory everlasting.
O Lord, save thy people, * and bless thine heritage.
Govern them, * and lift them up for ever.
Day by day * we magnify thee;

During the following verse, by local custom, all make a profound bow.
And we worship thy Name * ever, world without end.

Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us * this day without sin.
O Lord, have mercy upon us, * have mercy upon us.
O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us, * as our trust is in thee.
O Lord, in thee have I trusted, * let me never be confounded.
