Invitatory {Antiphon from the Common or Feast}
Ant. The Lord, the King of Virgins, * O come, let us worship.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Virgins, * O come, let us worship.
Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Virgins, * O come, let us worship.
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For the Lord will not cast off his people: for in his hand are all the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his.
Ant. O come, let us worship.
For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (genuflect) Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us: For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Virgins, * O come, let us worship.
Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts: As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.
Ant. O come, let us worship.
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. The Lord, the King of Virgins, * O come, let us worship.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. O come, let us worship.

Psalm 61 [1]
61:2 Shall not my soul be subject to God? * for from him is my salvation.
61:3 For he is my God and my saviour: * he is my protector, I shall be moved no more.
61:4 How long do you rush in upon a man? * you all kill, as if you were thrusting down a leaning wall, and a tottering fence.
61:5 But they have thought to cast away my price; I ran in thirst: * they blessed with their mouth, but cursed with their heart.
61:6 But be thou, O my soul, subject to God: * for from him is my patience.
61:7 For he is my God and my saviour: * he is my helper, I shall not be moved.
61:8 In God is my salvation and my glory: * he is the God of my help, and my hope is in God.
61:9 Trust in him, all ye congregation of people: pour out your hearts before him. * God is our helper for ever.

61:11 Trust not in iniquity, and cover not robberies: * if riches abound, set not your heart upon them.
61:12 God hath spoken once, these two things have I heard, that power belongeth to God, and mercy to thee, O Lord; * for thou wilt render to every man according to his works.

Reading 1
Lesson from the first book of Machabees
1 Mac 13:1-6
1 Now Simon heard that Tryphon was gathering together a very great army, to invade the land of Juda, and to destroy it.
2 And seeing that the people was in dread, and in fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and assembled the people:
3 And exhorted them, saying: You know what great battles I and my brethren, and the house of my father, have fought for the laws, and the sanctuary, and the distresses that we have seen:
4 By reason whereof all my brethren have lost their lives for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.
5 And now far be it from me to spare my life in any time of trouble: for I am not better than my brethren.
6 I will avenge then my nation and the sanctuary, and our children, and wives: for all the heathens are gathered together to destroy us out of mere malice.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The Lord open your hearts in His law and commandments, and send peace in your days.
* May He grant you salvation and redeem you out of all evil.
℣. The Lord hear your prayers, and be at one with you, and never forsake you in the time of trouble.
℟. May He grant you salvation and redeem you out of all evil.
℣. Jube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Unigénitus Dei Fílius nos benedícere et adjuváre dignétur. Amen.

7 And the spirit of the people was enkindled as soon as they heard these words.
8 And they answered with a loud voice, saying: Thou art our leader in the place of Judas, and Jonathan thy brother.
9 Fight thou our battles, and we will do whatsoever thou shalt say to us.
10 So gathering together all the men of war, he made haste to finish all the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.
11 And he sent Jonathan the son of Absalom, and with him a new army into Joppe, and he cast out them that were in it, and himself remained there.
12 And Tryphon removed from Ptolemais with a great army, to invade the land of Juda, and Jonathan was with him in custody.

1 Mac 13:14-19

1 Mac 13:14-19
14 And when Tryphon understood that Simon was risen up in the place of his brother Jonathan, and that he meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers to him,
15 Saying: We have detained thy brother Jonathan for the money that he owed in the king's account, by reason of the affairs which he had the management of.
16 But now send a hundred talents of silver, and his two sons for hostages, that when he is set at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will release him.
17 Now Simon knew that he spoke deceitfully to him, nevertheless he ordered the money, and the children to be sent: lest he should bring upon himself a great hatred of the people of Israel, who might have said:
18 Because he sent not the money, and the children, therefore is he lost.
19 So he sent the children, and the hundred talents: and he lied, and did not let Jonathan go.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Our enemies are gathered together, and make their boast of their own strength. O Lord, break their power, and scatter them
* That they may know that there is none other that fighteth for us, but only Thou, O our God!
℣. Scatter them in thy strength, and destroy them, O Lord our Shield.
℟. That they may know that there is none other that fighteth for us, but only Thou, O our God!
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. That they may know that there is none other that fighteth for us, but only Thou, O our God!

67:4 Et justi epuléntur, et exsúltent in conspéctu Dei: * et delecténtur in lætítia.
67:5 Cantáte Deo, psalmum dícite nómini ejus: * iter fácite ei, qui ascéndit super occásum: (fit reverentia) Dóminus nomen illi.
67:5 Exsultáte in conspéctu ejus: * turbabúntur a fácie ejus, patris orphanórum et júdicis viduárum.
67:6 Deus in loco sancto suo: * Deus, qui inhabitáre facit uníus moris in domo:
67:7 Qui edúcit vinctos in fortitúdine, * simíliter eos qui exásperant, qui hábitant in sepúlcris.
67:8 Deus, cum egrederéris in conspéctu pópuli tui, * cum pertransíres in desérto:

67:10 Plúviam voluntáriam segregábis, Deus, hereditáti tuæ: * et infirmáta est, tu vero perfecísti eam.

Ant. Let God arise, * and let his enemies be scattered.
Psalm 67(2-11) [4]
67:2 Let God arise, and let his enemies be scattered: * and let them that hate him flee from before his face.
67:3 As smoke vanisheth, so let them vanish away: * as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
67:4 And let the just feast, and rejoice before God: * and be delighted with gladness.
67:5 Sing ye to God, sing a psalm to his name, * make a way for him who ascendeth upon the west: (bow head) The Lord is his name.
67:5 Rejoice ye before him: * but the wicked shall be troubled at his presence, who is the father of orphans, and the judge of widows.
67:6 God in his holy place: * God who maketh men of one manner to dwell in a house:
67:7 Who bringeth out them that were bound in strength; * in like manner them that provoke, that dwell in sepulchres.

Margaret Mary Alacoque was born of a respectable family in a village in the diocese of Autun. From her earliest years she gave signs of holiness. Filled with a burning love of the Virgin Mother of God, and of the august mystery of the Eucharist, while still a young girl she dedicated her virginity to God. Above all else she strove to realize in her life the performance of Christian virtues. She delighted to spend continuous hours in prayers and in meditation upon the things of heaven. She was humble, and patient in adversity. She practised bodily penance. She was charitable towards her neighbours, especially the poor. By every means within her power she strove diligently to imitate the most holy example left by our divine Redeemer.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Because of truth, and meekness, and righteousness;
* And thy right hand shall lead thee wonderfully.
℣. In thy comeliness, and thy beauty, go forward, fare prosperously, and reign.
℟. And thy right hand shall lead thee wonderfully.
℣. Jube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ. Amen.

Margaret entered the Order of the Visitation. There her life became immediately a shining example to others. God endowed her highly with the gift of prayer. He gave her other favours, such as frequent visitations. The most famous of these was that one when Jesus appeared to her as she knelt in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Opening his breast, He revealed his divine Heart glowing with flames and encircled with a crown of thorns. He bade her in return for his excessive love and in atonement for the insults of ungrateful men, to seek to have established public adoration of his Heart. This devotion he promised to enrich with treasures of heavenly grace. When, out of humility, she hesitated to undertake so great a task, the loving Saviour encouraged her. At the same time he pointed out Claude de la Colombiere, a man of great holiness, as one who could guide and help her. Our Lord also comforted her with the assurance that very great blessings would accrue afterwards to the Church from the worship of his divine Heart.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity;
* Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness.
℣. Because of truth, and meekness, and righteousness.
℟. Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness.
℣. Jube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris. Amen.

Margaret strove ardently to fulfill the Redeemer's command. Vexations, even bitter insults, were her portion from some who maintained that she was subject to mental aberrations. She not only bore these sufferings patiently, she even profited by them, offering herself in anguish and reproach as a victim acceptable to God, bearing all things as a more sure means of accomplishing her purpose. Renowned for her religious perfection, becoming each day more closely united with her divine spouse by contemplation of celestial things, she took flight to him in the forty-third year of her age, and in the year of restored salvation 1690. She became famous for miracles. Benedict XV added her to the list of the saints; Pius XI extended her office to the universal Church.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. After her shall virgins be brought unto the King, her fellows
* They shall be brought unto thee with gladness and rejoicing.
℣. In thy comeliness and thy beauty, go forward, fare prosperously, and reign.
℟. They shall be brought unto thee with gladness and rejoicing.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. They shall be brought unto thee with gladness and rejoicing.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum
Matt 11:25-30

℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May the Gospel's holy lection be our safety and protection. Amen.

From the Holy Gospel according to Matthew
Matt 11:25-30
At that time: Jesus answered and said: I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. And so on, and that which followeth.

Homily of St. Francis de Sales, Bishop
Sermo 23 in die Pentecostes alter, circa medium
There is no other true knowledge given but that which is given by the Holy Ghost. And this is granted to the humble only. Have we not known great theologians who spake marvellously of the virtues but did not practice them? Have we not seen, on the contrary, many women who did not know how to discourse on the virtues, practice the works of virtue worthily? The Holy Spirit hath made these wise because they had fear of the Lord, piety and humility.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is one of those wise virgins, whom the Lord found watching, for when she took her lamp, she took oil with her.
* And when the Lord came, she went in with him to the marriage.
℣. At midnight there was a cry made: Behold, the Bridegroom cometh, go ye out to meet him.
℟. And when the Lord came, she went in with him to the marriage.
℣. Jube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Amen.

Our Lord is the great and excellent physician of all our infirmities. Before he came into the world he announced openly to his prophets, I will bind up that which was broken, and I will strengthen that which is weak. Finally with his own lips he invited us, saying, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest. What wonder is it, then, if we see him surrounded by the sick, by sinners, and by publicans. Is it not the glory of the physician to be sought out by the sick?
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. At midnight there was a cry made:
* Behold, the Bridegroom cometh, go ye out to meet him.
℣. Trim your lamps, O ye wise virgins.

The Lord beareth our miseries and ennobleth them. He layeth our miseries to his Heart; he sheweth his side. It is meet then, that we should make some return to him, lest he who now sheweth us his wounds out of love, may one day shew them with wrath and indignation. Grant, O good Jesu, that we may receive the peace which thou dost offer and let us see thy wounds. Since there remain faith, hope and charity, grant that, rooted in faith, rejoicing in hope, glowing in charity, we may await thy coming in the blessed expectation that we may see thee as the Lamb upon the right, and not as the lion on the left. May clear sight take the place of hope, and, to our imperfect charity may there succeed that perfect charity in which we may rejoice forever and ever. Amen.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Hymn
Jesu, the virgins' crown, do thou
Accept us as in prayer we bow;
Born of that Virgin, whom alone
The mother and the maid we own.

Amongst the lilies thou dost feed,
By virgin choirs accompanied;
With glory decked, the spotless brides
Whose bridal gifts thy love provides.

They, wheresoe'er thy footsteps bend,
With hymns and praises still attend:
In blessèd troops they follow thee,
With dance, and song, and melody.

We pray thee therefore to bestow
Upon our senses here below
Thy grace, that so we may endure
From taint of all corruption pure.

All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, eternal Son, to thee;
All glory as is ever meet,
To God, the holy Paraclete.
Amen.

℣. Grace is poured into thy lips.
℟. Therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.

Hymn
Now in the sun's new dawning ray,
Lowly of heart, our God we pray
That he from harm may keep us free
In all the deeds this day shall see.

May fear of him our tongues restrain,
Lest strife unguarded speech should stain:
His favouring care our guardian be,
Lest our eyes feed on vanity.

May every heart be pure from sin
And folly find no place therein:
Scant need of food, excess denied,
Wear down in us the body's pride.

That when the light of day is gone,
And night in course shall follow on.
We, free from cares the world affords,
May chant the praise that is our Lord's.

All laud to God the Father be,
All praise, Eternal Son, to thee:
All glory, as is ever meet,
To God the holy Paraclete.
Amen.

Art with the Father and the Son,

With thy full flood of holiness.

Let flesh and heart and lips and mind
Sound forth our witness to mankind;

Till others catch the living flame.

Psalm 72(1-9) [1]
72:1 How good is God to Israel, * to them that are of a right heart!
72:2 But my feet were almost moved; * my steps had wellnigh slipped.
72:3 Because I had a zeal on occasion of the wicked, * seeing the prosperity of sinners.
72:4 For there is no regard to their death, * nor is there strength in their stripes.
72:5 They are not in the labour of men: * neither shall they be scourged like other men.
72:6 Therefore pride hath held them fast: * they are covered with their iniquity and their wickedness.
72:7 Their iniquity hath come forth, as it were from fatness: * they have passed into the affection of the heart.
72:8 They have thought and spoken wickedness: * they have spoken iniquity on high.
72:9 They have set their mouth against heaven: * and their tongue hath passed through the earth.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

Psalmus 72(10-17) [2]

Psalm 72(10-17) [2]
72:10 Therefore will my people return here * and full days shall be found in them.
72:11 And they said: How doth God know? * and is there knowledge in the most High?
72:12 Behold these are sinners; and yet abounding in the world * they have obtained riches.
72:13 And I said: Then have I in vain justified my heart, * and washed my hands among the innocent.
72:14 And I have been scourged all the day; * and my chastisement hath been in the mornings.
72:15 If I said: I will speak thus; * behold I should condemn the generation of thy children.
72:16 I studied that I might know this thing, * it is a labour in my sight:

72:20 As the dream of them that awake, O Lord; * so in thy city thou shalt bring their image to nothing.
72:21 For my heart hath been inflamed, and my reins have been changed: * and I am brought to nothing, and I knew not.
72:23 I am become as a beast before thee: * and I am always with thee.
72:24 Thou hast held me by my right hand; and by thy will thou hast conducted me, * and with thy glory thou hast received me.
72:25 For what have I in heaven? * and besides thee what do I desire upon earth?
72:26 For thee my flesh and my heart hath fainted away: * thou art the God of my heart, and the God that is my portion for ever.
72:27 For behold they that go far from thee shall perish: * thou hast destroyed all them that are disloyal to thee.

Immótus in te pérmanens,

Hymn
O strength and stay upholding all creation,
Who ever dost thyself unmoved abide,
Yet day by day the light in due gradation
From hour to hour through all its changes guide:

Grant to life’s day a calm unclouded ending,
An eve untouched by shadows of decay,
The brightness of a holy death-bed blending
With dawning glories of th’ eternal day.

Hear us, O Father, gracious and forgiving,
And thou, O Christ, the co-eternal Word,
Who, with the Holy Ghost, by all things living
Now and to endless ages art adored.
Amen.

Chapter Hymn Verse {from the Common or Feast}
Eph 2:19-20
Brothers: Now therefore you are no more strangers and foreigners; but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and the domestics of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Hymn
Now let the earth with joy resound,
And heaven the chant re-echo round;
Nor heaven nor earth too high can raise
The great Apostles' glorious praise.

O ye who, throned in glory dread,
Shall judge the living and the dead,
Lights of the world forevermore!
To you the suppliant prayer we pour.

Ye close the sacred gates on high;
At your command apart they fly:
Oh! loose for us the guilty chain
We strive to break, and strive in vain.

Sickness and health your voice obey;
At your command they go or stay:
From sin's disease our souls restore;
In good confirm us more and more.

So when the world is at its end,
And Christ to judgement shall descend,
May we be called those joys to see
Prepared from all eternity.

Praise to the Father, with the Son,
And Holy Spirit, Three in One;
As ever was in ages past,
And so shall be while ages last.
Amen.

℣. Their sound hath gone forth into all the earth:
℟. And their words unto the ends of the world.

Before the ending of the day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That with thy wonted favor thou
Wouldst be our guard and keeper now.

Tread under foot our ghostly foe,
That no pollution we may know.

O Father, that we ask be done,
Through Jesus Christ, thine only Son;
Who, with the Holy Ghost and thee,
Doth live and reign eternally.
Amen.
