Ant. Regem ventúrum Dóminum, * Veníte, adorémus.
Quóniam Deus magnus Dóminus, et Rex magnus super omnes deos, quóniam non repéllet Dóminus plebem suam: quia in manu ejus sunt omnes fines terræ, et altitúdines móntium ipse cónspicit.
Ant.

Invitatory {Antiphon from the Psalter for the season of the Church year}
Ant. The Lord, the King who is to come * O come, let us adore Him.
Ant. The Lord, the King who is to come * O come, let us adore Him.
Come let us praise the Lord with joy: let us joyfully sing to God our saviour. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise to him with psalms.
Ant. The Lord, the King who is to come * O come, let us adore Him.
For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For the Lord will not cast off his people: for in his hand are all the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are his.
Ant. O come, let us adore Him.
For the sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. (genuflect) Come let us adore and fall down: and weep before the Lord that made us: For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.
Ant. The Lord, the King who is to come * O come, let us adore Him.
Today if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts: As in the provocation, according to the day of temptation in the wilderness: where your fathers tempted me, they proved me, and saw my works.
Ant. O come, let us adore Him.
Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: These always err in heart. And these men have not known my ways: so I swore in my wrath that they shall not enter into my rest.
Ant. The Lord, the King who is to come * O come, let us adore Him.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. O come, let us adore Him.

Hymnus {ex Psalterio secundum tempora}
Verbum supérnum, pródiens
E Patris ætérni sinu,
Qui natus orbi súbvenis,
Labénte cursu témporis:

Illúmina nunc péctora,
Tuóque amóre cóncrema;
Ut cor cadúca déserens
Cæli volúptas ímpleat.

Ut, cum tribúnal Júdicis
Damnábit igni nóxios,
Et vox amíca débitum
Vocábit ad cælum pios;

Non esca flammárum nigros
Volvámur inter túrbines,
Vultu Dei sed cómpotes
Cæli fruámur gáudiis.

Patri, simúlque Fílio,
Tibíque, Sancte Spíritus,
Sicut fuit, sit júgiter
Sæclum per omne glória.
Amen.
Hymn {from the Psalter for the season of the Church year}
Celestial Word, to this our earth
Sent down from God's eternal clime,
To save mankind by mortal birth
Into a world of change and time;

Enlighten our hearts; vain hopes destroy;
And in thy love's consuming fire
Fill all the soul with heavenly joy,
And melt the dross of low desire.

So when the Judge of quick and dead
Shall bid his awful summons come,
To whelm the guilty soul with dread,
And call the blessed to their home.

Saved from the whirling, black abyss,
Forevermore to us be given
To share the feast of saintly bliss,
And see the face of God in heaven.

To God the Father and the Son
Our songs with one accord we raise;
And to the Holy Spirit, One
With them, be ever equal praise
Amen.

Nocturn I.
Ant. Véniet ecce Rex.
Psalmus 1 [1]
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℟. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Nocturn I.
Ant. Behold, there cometh the King.
Psalm 1 [1]
1:1 Blessed is the man who hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, * nor sat in the chair of pestilence.
1:2 But his will is in the law of the Lord, * and on his law he shall meditate day and night.
1:3 And he shall be like a tree which is planted near the running waters, * which shall bring forth its fruit, in due season.
1:3 And his leaf shall not fall off: * and all whatsoever he shall do shall prosper.
1:4 Not so the wicked, not so: * but like the dust, which the wind driveth from the face of the earth.
1:5 Therefore the wicked shall not rise again in judgment: * nor sinners in the council of the just.
1:6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the just: * and the way of the wicked shall perish.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

2:2 Astitérunt reges terræ, et príncipes convenérunt in unum * advérsus Dóminum, et advérsus Christum ejus.
2:3 Dirumpámus víncula eórum: * et proiciámus a nobis jugum ipsórum.
2:4 Qui hábitat in cælis, irridébit eos: * et Dóminus subsannábit eos.
2:7 Dóminus dixit ad me: * Fílius meus es tu, ego hódie génui te.

2:11 Servíte Dómino in timóre: * et exsultáte ei cum tremóre.

Psalm 2 [2]
2:1 Why have the Gentiles raged, * and the people devised vain things?
2:2 The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes met together, * against the Lord and against his Christ.
2:3 Let us break their bonds asunder: * and let us cast away their yoke from us.
2:4 He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh at them: * and the Lord shall deride them.
2:5 Then shall he speak to them in his anger, * and trouble them in his rage.
2:6 But I am appointed king by him over Sion his holy mountain, * preaching his commandment.
2:7 The Lord hath said to me: * Thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee.
2:8 Ask of me, and I will give thee the Gentiles for thy inheritance, * and the utmost parts of the earth for thy possession.
2:9 Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron, * and shalt break them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
2:10 And now, O ye kings, understand: * receive instruction, you that judge the earth.
2:11 Serve ye the Lord with fear: * and rejoice unto him with trembling.
2:12 Embrace discipline, lest at any time the Lord be angry, * and you perish from the just way.
2:13 When his wrath shall be kindled in a short time, * blessed are all they that trust in him.

3:7 Non timébo míllia pópuli circumdántis me: * exsúrge, Dómine, salvum me fac, Deus meus.

Psalm 9(12-21) [6]
9:12 Sing ye to the Lord, who dwelleth in Sion: * declare his ways among the Gentiles.
9:13 For requiring their blood he hath remembered them: * he hath not forgotten the cry of the poor.
9:14 Have mercy on me, O Lord: * see my humiliation which I suffer from my enemies.
9:15 Thou that liftest me up from the gates of death, * that I may declare all thy praises in the gates of the daughter of Sion.
9:16 I will rejoice in thy salvation: * the Gentiles have stuck fast in the destruction which they have prepared.
9:16 Their foot hath been taken * in the very snare which they hid.
9:17 The Lord shall be known when he executeth judgments: * the sinner hath been caught in the works of his own hands.
9:18 The wicked shall be turned into hell, * all the nations that forget God.
9:19 For the poor man shall not be forgotten to the end: * the patience of the poor shall not perish for ever.

9:21 Appoint, O Lord, a lawgiver over them: * that the Gentiles may know themselves to be but men.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

De Expositióne sancti Hierónymi Presbýteri in Isaíam Prophétam
Liber 4. in cap.
℣. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.

℟. Ecce véniet Dóminus, protéctor noster, Sanctus Israël,
* Corónam regni habens in cápite suo.
℣. Et dominábitur a mari usque ad mare, et a flúmine usque ad términos orbis terrárum.
℟. Corónam regni habens in cápite suo.
℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May God the Father Omnipotent, be to us merciful and clement. Amen.

Reading 4
From the Commentary on the Prophecies of Isaiah made by St. Jerome, Priest (at Bethlehem)
Book iv, c. xi
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse. From the beginning of the Book of this Prophet till the xiiith chapter, where commenceth the vision, or burden of Babylon, the whole of the vision of Isaiah, the son of Amoz, is one continual prophecy of Christ. We must explain it part by part, for if we were to take it all at once, the memory of the reader would be confused. According to the Jewish commentators, the rod and the flower would both relate to the Lord Himself. They take the rod to mean the sceptre of His Royal dominion, and the flower the loveliness of His beauty.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Behold, there cometh the Lord, our defender, the Holy One of Israel,
* Wearing a royal crown upon His head.
℣. And His dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.
℟. Wearing a royal crown upon His head.
℣. Jube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Christus perpétuæ det nobis gáudia vitæ. Amen.

Lectio 5

℣. Dabo in Sion salútem, et in Jerúsalem glóriam meam.
℟. Et vidébitis et gaudébit cor vestrum.
℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May Christ to all His people give, for ever in His sight to live. Amen.

Reading 5
We, however, understand that the rod out of the root of Jesse signifieth the holy Virgin Mary. She was a clean stem that had as yet put forth no shoot; as we have read above Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son. Isa. vii. 14. And the flower we believe to mean the Lord our Redeemer, Who hath elsewhere compared Himself to a flower; I am a flower of the plain, and a lily of the valleys. Cant. ii. 1.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. As a mother comforteth her children, so will I comfort you, saith the Lord; My help also cometh unto you out of Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen.
* And when ye see this, your heart shall rejoice.
℣. I will place salvation in Zion and in Jerusalem My glory.
℟. And when ye shall see this, your heart shall rejoice.
℣. Jube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Ignem sui amóris accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris. Amen.

Lectio 6
℣. Tu autem, Dómine, miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.

℟. Jerúsalem, plantábis víneam in móntibus tuis: exsultábis, quóniam dies Dómini véniet: surge, Sion, convértere ad Dóminum Deum tuum: gaude et lætáre, Jacob:
* Quia de médio géntium Salvátor tuus véniet.
℣. Exsúlta satis, fília Sion: júbila, fília Jerúsalem.
℟. Quia de médio géntium Salvátor tuus véniet.
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.
℟. Quia de médio géntium Salvátor tuus véniet.
℣. Grant, Lord, a blessing.
Benediction. May the Spirit's fire Divine in our hearts enkindled shine. Amen.

Reading 6
The Spirit of the Lord then shall rest upon this flower; this flower which shall come forth from the stem and roots of Jesse by means of the Virgin Mary. And truly the Spirit of the Lord did rest upon our Redeemer. It is written that In Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Col. ii. 9. The Spirit was not shed on Him by measure, as it is upon the 4 Isa. Ixvi. 13, 14. Isa. xlvi. 13. Saints. To Him we may apply the words of the Hebrew Gospel used by the Nazarenes; The whole fountain of the Holy Ghost shall be poured forth upon Him The Lord is a spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Cor. iii. 17.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Thou shalt yet plant vines upon thy mountains, O Jerusalem thou shalt sing for joy, for the day of the Lord cometh; arise, O Zion, and turn unto the Lord thy God; rejoice and be glad, O Jacob.
* For thy Saviour cometh from the midst of the nations.
℣. Sing aloud for joy, O daughter of Zion; shout with gladness, O daughter of Jerusalem.
℟. For thy Saviour cometh from the midst of the nations.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. For thy Saviour cometh from the midst of the nations.

Psalm 9(22-32) [7]
9:22 Why, O Lord, hast thou retired afar off? * why dost thou slight us in our wants, in the time of trouble?
9:23 Whilst the wicked man is proud, the poor is set on fire: * they are caught in the counsels which they devise.
9:24 For the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul: * and the unjust man is blessed.
9:25 The sinner hath provoked the Lord, * according to the multitude of his wrath he will not seek him.
9:26 God is not before his eyes: * his ways are filthy at all times.
9:26 Thy judgments are removed from his sight: * he shall rule over all his enemies.
9:27 For he hath said in his heart: * I shall not be moved from generation to generation, and shall be without evil.
9:28 His mouth is full of cursing, and of bitterness, and of deceit: * under his tongue are labour and sorrow.
9:29 He sitteth in ambush with the rich, in private places, * that he may kill the innocent.
9:30 His eyes are upon the poor man: * he lieth in wait, in secret, like a lion in his den.
9:30 He lieth in ambush, that he may catch the poor man: * so catch the poor, whilst he draweth him to him.
9:31 In his net he will bring him down, * he will crouch and fall, when he shall have power over the poor.
9:32 For he hath said in his heart: God hath forgotten, * he hath turned away his face, not to see to the end.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. The Angel Gabriel spake unto Mary, saying: Hail, thou that art full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
Ant. María dixit:
Psalmus 9(33-39) [8]

℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

Ant.
Ant. Mary said:
Psalm 9(33-39) [8]
9:33 Arise, O Lord God, let thy hand be exalted: * forget not the poor.
9:34 Wherefore hath the wicked provoked God? * for he hath said in his heart: He will not require it.
9:35 Thou seest it, for thou considerest labour and sorrow: * that thou mayst deliver them into thy hands.
9:35 To thee is the poor man left: * thou wilt be a helper to the orphan.
9:36 Break thou the arm of the sinner and of the malignant: * his sin shall be sought, and shall not be found.
9:37 The Lord shall reign to eternity, yea, for ever and ever: * ye Gentiles shall perish from his land.
9:38 The Lord hath heard the desire of the poor: * thy ear hath heard the preparation of their heart.
9:39 To judge for the fatherless and for the humble, * that man may no more presume to magnify himself upon earth.

Homilia 6 in Evangelia, post initium
From the Holy Gospel according to Matthew
Matt 11:2-10
In that time, when John had heard in prison the works of Christ: sending two of his disciples he said to him: Art thou he that art to come, or look we for another? And so on.

Homily by Pope St. Gregory the Great.
6th Homily on the Gospels
The sight of so many signs and so many mighty works should have been a source of wonder, and not a stumbling-block. And yet the unfaithful Jer. xxxi. 5. found these very works a rock of offence, when they afterwards saw Him Who had worked so many miracles dying on the Cross. Hence Paul saith: "We preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling-block and unto the Gentiles foolishness." 1 Cor. i. 23. It is indeed folly in the eyes of men to say that the Author of life died for men and thus men put as a stumbling-block to hinder them from coming to Jesus, the very thing that doth oblige them the most unto Him. For the more humbling God hath undergone for man's sake, the more worthy is He that man should worship Him.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The Lord shall go forth out of Samaria unto the gate that looketh toward the East; and He shall come into Bethlehem, walking upon the waters of the redemption of Judah.
* Then shall every one be saved for, behold, He cometh.
℣. And in mercy shall His throne be established, and He shall sit upon it in truth.
℟. Then shall every one be saved for, behold, He cometh.
℣. Jube, domne, benedícere.
Benedictio. Divínum auxílium máneat semper nobíscum. Amen.

And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in Me. Now what is this, but a plain mention of that time, when He afterwards humbled Himself, becoming obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross? It is as if He said: I indeed do wonderful works, but the day will come when I shall not refuse to suffer shame and evil treatment. Take heed then, ye who now worship Me for the works' sake, that when I come to die ye despise Me not for My death's sake.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

And, as the disciples of John departed, what did Jesus say unto the multitudes concerning this same John? Let us hear. What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? Here our Lord teacheth not by assertion, but by negation. Now a reed is a thing so made that as soon as the wind bloweth upon it, it bendeth it over toward the opposite quarter. And the fleshly-minded man is like a human reed. As he is praised or blamed so he bendeth himself in the one direction or the other.
